In volleyball, the first reception after a serve often determines how many attacking options a team will have before the ball even reaches the setter. A controlled pass gives the setter access to the full width of the net, allows attackers to approach on time, and forces blockers to process several threats. A poor reception does the opposite. It reduces choices, slows the attack, and makes the next action easier for the defense to predict.
